For the Fatherland takes us to the time of Basil II, the so-called Bulgarian killer, when the Bulgarians, taking advantage of the emperor's absence in Asia Minor, attack Macedonia. Then Alexios and his wife Thekla undertake the dangerous mission of conveying a message from the emperor to the Dynast of Dyrrachius.
Adventures, Bulgarian spies, difficult conditions make up a very interesting plot.
The dominant thing, however, is the power of emotions: Thekla's love for her husband and the devotion of both to the idea of the Motherland and to the person of the emperor.
